Living in Le Marche Italy

News March 2004

As I sit here at the end of the month just waiting for March and the spring? to begin I turn round to look out of the window and see only winter, I know it is still cold in England but this is ITALY where the sun always shines or so I was told. I hope we do not get a repeat of last year where we had a bad spell just as the blossom was breaking and it destroyed most of our fruit crop.
Normally words seem to flow very naturally when I sit here, but for some reason this month I seem to be struggling to make things interesting. When I thought about it I came to the conclusion that we have settled so much into the “Italian lifestyle” that things are now becoming very much everyday, even events that would have had us in despair even a year ago, are now just another day and nothing to worry about. I suppose that in itself is not a bad thing, but I must make a conscious effort to remind myself just what we have here and how good a life we have built because I get the feeling that Liz will not be to happy to leave what we have here, or as she has already put it “I’m going nowhere this is forever” Anyway we have so much to occupy us this year with new projects under way of which I will have more to write on as the year passes.
We do have some very brave friends who are just about to move into a caravan close to their land on which a house is meant to rise out of and we will all be celebrating this Christmas in. The idea is to be close to what is going on and keep the builders on site and on schedule, yes builders are the same the world over but I have to confess to being rather glad that I lead this boring life in a real “House” on this one. I do hope it all goes well for you Phill and Maggie but if not I can recommend a good B&B run by really nice people. I will keep you updated on the progress of this project as it will give you a good insite as to how things work here.
I am going to close now for this month just bringing to mind other peoples problems has made me think that maybe I should just enjoy what we already have so I am off to get ready for a nice meal home cooked by an excellent chef (Liz) and some top quality wine from our own vines, yes on reflection life is still pretty good!

News April 2004

As April creeps in it is all very uninspiring weather wise although we have had some nice days already with several spent outside at around 7am having breakfast, then a return cooler temperatures hope we don’t get a repeat of last year with late snow which destroyed our fruit crop. Work continues to grow and we now involve our friends as well which seems to be of benefit to everyone.
Which brings me on to my soap box topic for this month, Agents and restoration work.If you have already bought or thought about it and made inquiries, you will have noticed the high cost and long waiting time to to get the work done. This is due in large part to some of the agents liking to keep all the selling, planning, and restoration “in house” which means you will pay a large premium for this convenience. Most of the agents have a “cartel” within each company for everything from the sale through to building work. But there other ways, if you are prepared to put in some effort of your own you could save yourselves a considerable amount of money by sourcing in particular builders. In spite of what you may be told there are other builders out there who are more readily available and definitely more reasonable with their charges, even if they like most Italians think all English have bottomless pockets. So if you want the convenience of “supermarket” all under one roof property buying stick with the agent, but if you want an alternative it is out there and after a year or more of excuses you wonder where the convenience went to end of soapbox.
But now on to our final acceptance into our new(ish) life here and which is most definitely going to be the highlight of our year. That is the wedding of Sara the daughter of the Barchetta family our very good friends and neighbours who you will have read about many times on our site. They are the people who have taken us under their wing and guided us through the sometimes hard times we have had along the way, and without who we may have packed it all in by now. But now we are settled and nothing seems to bother us to much as it would have in England, even today we went to sort out three items, but as is normal one was ready the other two “maybe tomorrow” that is life here. Liz is quite looking forward to being able to dress up for Sara’s wedding and she may even (Liz has just proofed this and says she WILL) get to buy something new, we don’t seem to have a need for designer cloths anymore so a new outfit will be real occasion on its own. But the real treat will be an “Italian” wedding which is being done on a grand scale with all the frills, it was an honor to go out today a choose the couples present from the shop holding the list (almost English). Just hope the day goes well for them, we know her well as she used to come to us for English lessons, which was just a small return for the families help. So next month we should be able to treat you to one or two great photos of the big event, and given the planning going into it they deserve to be good.
