Life in Le Marche Italy

This section is devoted to our ongoing news about ourselves, the local people and events that surround us. You will need to go back to the past news pages for some of our updated news to make sense. It is like starting a book at the ending then reading back to the beginning

News September 2003

As I sit here waiting for my latest upgrade on viruses from Microsoft to download because a_computer_3I have suffered from the latest infection on my computer from someone who has nothing better to do with their life than try to make it as hard as possible for innocent people to go about theirs. I thought I might as well start to update this month’s news, on my new computer which was meant to make life easier, apart from bugs and infections getting in. I suppose it is a sad fact of life that the internet, while being one of the great advances toward a smaller world and with great potential still to come also draws sad backward thinking people. If only they could use their undoubted skills, into constructive rather than destructive avenues what even greater leaps we could make into the future.

The latest news is that our other web site http://www.ouritaly.co.uk will also carry this news bulletin, but with a twist. One of our daughters thinks my writing skills leave a lot to be desired, so she will be taking this update and editing it professionally; my skills are not up to her standards. I will welcome your input into this; for the moment I will keep my own style of writing on, so hopefully you will still be able to recognise me from my ramblings. Let me know which version you prefer

Autumn is drawing closer now, as we have had to have a truck load of logs delivered to see us through the short (we hope) but very cold winter. Having prepared properly like real Italians this year, we are hoping that summer will last a while longer yet, and winter will be a mild affair this time. As the cost of any type of fuel here is just so expensive, so the less we use the better. We are feeling more confident about the access to our house through the worst of the weather now, as the new road should improve things greatly I have promised not to say any more about our “white road” as the family think we are becoming obsessed with issues that have no importance, they should try living here on a permanent basis.

a_a_The_grass_grows_quickly_hereBut apart from this life in Italy is still good, and we have had an “Italian” summer just as we hoped they would be here, after the past two years when it was actually better in England. It has been hot since Easter without a letup, there has almost no rain in fact it has only rained four times since then although it does look likely to change from now on.

Life this month has been pretty busy with our house management jobs, B&B, and apartment, in spite of the rest of Italy being on holiday for almost the whole of August. Also we now have the next instalment of the dogs saga to endure, as Poppy is now in season, so we will try to avoid the problems we had with “baby” Daisy and her encounter with an Italian stud (last month).

Life has settled into a “Mediterranean” lifestyle for us now, living alfresco from spring to late autumn surrounded by good company and friends as one might say “living the dream”. It does mean for us we have to live it as a local person would, which entails working hard to earn an income and then enjoying the social life to the full. But all in all we are achieving everything we planned on, although at times it did all seem that the dream was just that and nothing more.

Now back to reality I have to e-mail this to Hayley for editing to include in our other site, then outside to put a pen back up, to keep Poppy safe from any local Italian “Casanova” dogs for the next week life is hard.

Okay a couple days on and I have the edited version the first vote goes to me because it’s my site! I feel Hayley and Rob are right, theirs does read better but then I always new it would. They also came up with a couple of good ideas, one to put up some of Liz’s great pickle recipe’s which will be easy to do, harder will be the second idea which is to do some reviews on the local restaurants. I am not sure of my skills on reviews as some of the local food is superb and I would need to do it justice but maybe with a little help from my editors it might just be on so watch this space!

News October 2003

It still feels like summer as we leave September but the dew on the grass and shutting our bedroom window at bedtime points to autumn arriving rapidly, but the days are still warm and enjoyable even the rain is being very reluctant to arrive and we do need some soon. We had family leave yesterday which detracted me from being on time with this update I have to get this one in today as we have more friends arriving in the early hours from Ancona just hope the Hertz queue is not to long. These are people who when they found out what they were missing are now in the process of going through the “no going back” relocation and will be here to complete on their own little bit of Italy this week.

I promised not to mention “white roads” again but it just that the main Comune white road is actually now a fully fledged ash felted road now, I am not sure why they chose our road as none of the others in the area have been done. so when I said I would believe it when I saw it, believe!.

Liz is still working hard in her vegetable patch the tomatoes keep coming although slowing down now, she has planted yet another crop of lettuce and other salad crops, along with winter crops greens, and cauliflower nothing seems to worry her any more when it comes to trying something new We are still enjoying our very first year of home grown Melons, Peppers, and Aubergines, although our potatoes were very poor due to the lack of rain this year and we are back to buying them in now. Still the new vineyard is looking good we did have to resort to some watering to save them from the drought, so next year should see them flourish then the year after maybe our first crop!.

a_a_dogs_1Just a quick update on our two young dogs now fully grown and real “fearless guardians” used to the hard Italian farm conditions that they will have to endure during their working lives through long days and nights with no time off for good behaviour, you can tell they will be worked hard and enjoy very few luxuries.
