Macerata Marche Italy News Round Up

News May 2003

Spring has well and truly broken at last after the late snow earlier this month, yes after we thought the bad weather was behind us it gave us one last blast just after the new vinyard went in. It is nice to enjoy the warmth and sunshine amongst the full blossom now on the trees, vines starting to shoot, and grass growing so fast you can almost see it. My winter blues have well and truly passed all thoughts of being somewhere else far behind me, we are once again sure that we really have found our little piece of paradise. We are now in full swing toward even more planting towards the ”good life”we have become used to, and with yet another year behind us even more confident about the crops we grow. Liz will be very busy this year with the extra crops not only for fresh use, but for preserving and pickling, she is an absolute master at these skills now.
Some of our family were out over Easter which was nice, it helps to know the world is a small place now, with good transport into Ancona and Pescara(Ryanair), and the internet means living here does not mean isolation.a_a_sliegh_1The grandsons thought it was great to be able to drive up the mountains and sleigh, then come back down and play outside in the sunshine. They were lucky it was only the earlier cold spell that meant the snows on the slopes have been later in clearing for the summer. In fact far from isolation, we see a lot of family here, and with our large circle of friends both new and old, since moving here life is sometimes quite hectic.
But there is always a kind of serenity to this region of Italy lush, always green, and every week new sights to behold. We have the wooded a_a_cloudy_sunset_2areas full of new leaf and blossom, the banks are full of wild primroses, and wild orchids, this will be followed rapidly by vast carpets of poppies right across the valley. At night the valley is full of toads and frogs looking for their ideal mate,to followed soon by crickets doing the same, and almost time for that magical sight of the night air filled with firefly’s. These have to be seen to be believed they could almost have you believe in fairies, in fact when we had two granddaughter’s here last year they had to have them on their hands to prove they were really not.

News June 2003

Right on time the firefly’s have appeared so we spend many hours outside in the late evening watching them, as they last such a short period of the year. But the big event for us has arrived again in the form of our annual Feste the Frazione San Venanzo ‘Sagra de li Vincigrassi’ and I know these pages can seem a little “flowery” at times but in spite of that you still have to be so proud to belong to one of the local communities in this region. The people put so much dedication, devotion, and just plain hard work into these events for weeks beforehand so this year will be at least as good and hopefully better than the last years one. You can see the pictures below of our small hamlet the night before, deserted but ready with every bulb perfectly placed, and just out of shot the stage is still being finished off,and in the church kitchens people are also busy with the final touches. With storms forecast for the weekend every one is praying all will work out OK, as last year the Feste was all but washed out.

The weather stayed really nice for the Feste which is what the hamlet deserved for all the work that had gone into the day. Sunday is divided into two parts, the first part being a long lunch consisting of all the local specialities which is a great meal, although I am not convinced that chips would have appeared on the original menus. First on the choice of foods is always Vincigrassi a local dish from where the Feste gets its name, this is a lasagne style dish and is quite mouth watering .a_a_feste_10 Then part two is the evening which never gets underway until after nine pm, and starts where we left off mid afternoon with more food, and no need to mention wine, but again progress seems to creep in with more than a small amount of beer being consumed. This is very much the public side of the Feste and with good weather, good food, and a more than passable band playing, the crowds came and the Event seemed to be making a healthy return on the investment into the day. All in all just the result that the community should have after their effort, roll on next year lets do even better.
On the home front guests still keep coming both to our B&B and the Apartment, the Apartment has been a suprise as most of our B&B guests are here on some kind of mission to explore the region for a long term relationship with the area with a Holiday home or even to move permanently. The Apartment has seen a mix of “regulars”, and we now seem to welcome pure holiday people as well which has been nice and shows the Marche has been recognised for the beautiful region it is.
Our fruit and veg, vines, and fruit trees grow by the day, and we are just about getting into the self sufficiency way of life until at least the end of the year. With our stock of preserves that will also come from the crops, we should still be on those this time next year.
